Healthcare

Future Patient Experience

Designit partnered with a major materials company to design the hospital room of the future. The ask was to identify opportunities for product innovation within the hospital room patient experience space and then propose unique concepts that could be further developed and launched to market. The project involved extensive field and desk research of the healthcare and the IoT/smart objects space. At the end of the project, we delivered a suite of 4 products that interacted with one another as part of connected system. We also delivered a business design strategy and insights from our extensive research.

The 4 concepts are currently being developed and will be launched on the market over the next few years.

I WORKED ON

Service design, field and desk research, strategy, concepting, prototyping, workshop design and facilitation

I COLLABORATED WITH

Jo Roberts (lead, business design), Raghavendra Kandala (service design, research), Valentina Canavesio (research), William Conklin (product design, visual design), Cameron Winchester (visual and motion design, video production), Mukund Gopalakrishna (design director)

RESEARCH

The goal of our research was to understand the modern hospital from two lenses: the hospital operations lens and the patient experience lens. On the hospital operations side, we were interested in understanding how hospitals operate, challenges they face, the design process of patient rooms, and needs and pain points of hospital staff. On the patient experience side, we were looking to learn the range of different patients that use hospital rooms, their needs and pain points, and current innovations in the patient experience space. In the end, we did:

METHODS

Desk research, field visits, one-on-one interviews, co-creation activities

Stakeholder interviews

with client team and their partners

5

Field visits

at different hospitals and clinics around the country

concept Exploration

Based on challenges uncovered during our field research, we identified opportunities at different levels within the hospital. For each opportunity space, we developed an initial concept with a value proposition, product suite, and storyboard to demonstrate the experience.

METHODS

Ideation, prioritization matrix, future vision canvas

We delivered:

  • A product suite - with 4 products we showcased in a product concept video

  • Business case - through a market research report and business canvas

  • Product roadmap - facilitated a workshop to map out the rollout plan for each product

The products are currently in development.
